Scarlett Garnet is the joint venture of Garnet Griebel and Katie Miller. The two joined forces to promote their artistic vision and technical talent of handcrafted jewelry in 2006. Virtually “meeting” through mutual friends, Scarlett Garnet Jewelry was born while Katie lived in Charleston, SC, and Garnet in Kansas City, MO. After a year communicating solely through email and cell phone, Katie returned to St. Louis and the two finally met in October 2007. They continue to collaborate long distance across the state, allowing for an interesting dynamic in the creative process.

As they synergize their efforts, their designs remain distinguishable yet compatible and are at times a true collaboration. The natural beauty of earth elements in their raw form is a major focus of their work. Uncommon gemstones, unconventional cuts and asymmetrical pieces are Scarlett Garnet’s hallmark. They possess an eye for strong, architectural-like shapes that allow the wearer to make a bold statement. The addition of brass and copper to the more traditional sterling and gold in much of their work adds another literal element to their design palette. They strive to use unconventional objects such as vintage chandelier crystals and keys, animal bones, recycled materials and plastic in their work. Scarlett Garnet aims to make unique, and sometimes quirky pieces that reflect the wearer’s style and personality.

The two designers take advantage of the networking opportunities each city they reside in provide. Katie is a member of the St. Louis Craft Mafia, sells jewelry at various farmers markets and festivals around the city, and is a manager at Charm: A Jewelry Boutique in Downtown STL. Scarlett Garnet annually participates in St. Louis shows such as the Rock N Roll Craft Show, STL Fashion Week, The Big Ass Indie Craft Fair and The Taste of St. Louis. Scarlett Garnet’s revamped vintage jewelry was also recently featured in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and on Great Day St. Louis morning television show. Katie’s studio is within The Luminary Center for the Arts in South City.
Garnet houses a studio at KC WearHaus in the Crossroads Art District, where Scarlett Garnet participates in First Friday Art Walk every month. She’s also a founding member of the KC Wedding Hive where Scarlett Garnet promotes their bridal line during the Hive’s biannual indie wedding expositions. Scarlett Garnet annually participates in The RedLine Fashion Show: A Benefit for AIDS Awareness, Ric Rac Round Up and seasonal WearHaus Fashion Markets. Scarlett Garnet was also featured in the April 2009 Arts Issue of KC’s Urban Times magazine.
The designers also sell in several boutiques in both cities as well as in Chicago, San Francisco, Denver and Los Angeles. Annually, they travel to these cities to participate in larger shows like the Renegade Craft Fair.
Scarlett Garnet Jewelry is available for sale online, in a number of boutiques, and at festivals and art fairs around the country. Home parties, custom orders, and classes are also available.
